Better Gas Mileage with smaller tires?

I have a 1979 Ford Bronco with 35" tires and a 3" inch lift on it and I get around 8 mpg. I am thinking about putting 31" tires on it and am wondering how much more gas mileage I will get and if it will be worth getting smaller tires. Thanks for any information.
