Can you do the Atkins diet and not excersie and still lose weight?

my friend told me that if i continue to exercise while being on the low carb diet it will take longer for me to see results. she feel when starting the Atkins diet you should only do the diet for about 1-2 months before starting any kind of exercise routine so that you will have faster results, then start excersing. is this true?
