Why did Jesus have to come?

Why did Jesus come at all? It, seems to me, that God sent himself down to earth, had his people kill him, and then he ascended to heaven, or down to hell if your Lunthren etc., only to convince himself we were worth saving? He must have known this was going to happen (he is all knowing of course!). So why not start humanity off this way?..
